Life After Sandy

For the past 2 years my wife, daughter and I volunteered with the RAINE (Reaching All In Need Everyday) Foundation. Food was donated to be delivered to families in need to help them celebrate Thanksgiving. We all meet at Beers Street School in Hazlet because the food needs to be sorted then packed in care packages for each family. The package includes cans of vegetables, potatoes (mashed and sweet), deserts and other items. It even includes a turkey!

After the care packages are all packed we take some and deliver them to the families. This year one of our deliveries was to a gentlemen (I will leave out his name) in Keansburg. His house was affected by Hurricane Sandy. When we arrived in his area the 2 things I noticed right away were the mounds of items at the curb in front of all the homes and the amount of sand in the streets and on the side walks. On some of the streets you couldn't see any black top, just sand.

When we got to his house to deliver his food we brought it inside for him. I was curious so I asked him how he made out from the storm. He told me he had water in his house. He had to rip up most of the floor and all the insulation under the floor. He has 3 older kids that can't live there until it is cleaned up. Including his son who is asthmatic.

He then told us he lost his job due to no work and wasn't sure how he was going to make his mortgage. He also told us that during his ordeal he has been volunteering to help people who are worse off than him. The whole time we were talking he was upbeat, optimistic and very friendly. While I feel bad for all who were or are still affected, it is different when you meet and talk to someone in person. It reminds you that while you're life may be back to normal, life for some will never be the same.

Here is a guy who is facing some difficulties life threw him yet he takes time out to help others who are in a worse situation. It makes me wish there were more people like him around.

God Bless all the people who are still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Hurricane Sandy 2012

Whether you call it a hurricane, super-storm or another name, Hurricane Sandy blasted New Jersey. Everybody from Cape May to Highpoint felt her effects and everybody has their story. There are stories of survival, heroism, sadness, happy endings and unfortunately stories of scams, thievery and people taking advantage of the storm victims.

My wife, daughter and I drove through Union Beach, NJ, one of the hardest hit communities, on Tuesday to check on the house of a friend's parents. A few streets were blocked by emergency and rescue personnel. Other streets were blocked by debris. At the risk of using a cliche, the town looked like a war zone. House after house were destroyed, severely damaged, flooded, reduced to ruble or simply gone. It was very hard to look but at the same time I was fascinated at the level of destruction from wind and water.

Some people were clearing out their house of items ruined, others were cleaning up the debris in their yard, others were assessing the damage and others were just walking around in disbelief. I felt as if everybody thought I was driving through just to gawk at them, and believe me, I know the feeling; I went through a flood several years ago and the level of damage was nothing compared to this storm but people drove around to gawk and I did not like it. But we were not there to gawk but to check on a house.

We finally got to the house. I parked and opened the door and the first thing I noticed was the stench of home heating oil. As I stepped out of my truck I realized the street was covered in mud, wet sand and oil. It had to be about an inch thick and still slowly flowing back toward the bay.

At first glance the house seemed to be sound so I walked around the corner (the house is on a corner lot) then saw the side yard was still flooded. I also noticed the above ground pool was collapsed. What I didn't notice right then was that the pool had moved about 10 feet and slammed into the fence from the force of the storm surge. I walked back around and that's when I noticed the oil tank lying on it's side on the ground.

My wife called her friend and told her what we saw. The following Saturday her friend, her husband and her parents were going to be at the house trying to salvage what they could so we all decided to go and help. This time driving through the town, every house we passed had a mountain of the owners possessions piled at the curb. There were beds, dressers, tables, bags of clothing and other items piled high.

When we got to the house there were structural engineers surveying the houses in the area and we noticed 3 of them had red stickers on them; 'Deemed Uninhabitable'.It was a very sad sight.

We helped them salvage as much as we could fit in the trucks. Then turned our attention to the half full oil tank. It took a couple of times but we got it upright. We then had to brace it due to one of the legs breaking.

As we were walking around the first floor of the house, I got a sense of how high the water was. On top of the counter and range were puddles of water and sand and debris. They estimated about 7 feet of water on the first floor of the house.

After we were done I couldn't help but think how good it will feel to go home, take a shower and sit in my chair and relax with a beer. Then I thought about all the people who lost everything and won't be able to relax for quite some time. I wish I could do more for them and other people. If we all do just a little to help somebody, it will go a long way.

Fall Ball Palyoffs

Today were the play off games for the Clinic Division. Since there were only four teams(1 from Hazlet, 1 from Marlboro and 2 from Aberdeen/Matawan) all the teams made it. We wound up being the 3rd seed so we played at 11 AM. We played the Belles team from Aberdeen/Matawan.

We started off strong and had 8 runs in the first 2 innings. The Belles came back strong in the third and scored 4 runs. That would turn out to be the only runs they scored. We won in the 5th inning under the mercy rule.

All our girls played great. They all had at least one hit and scored a run. We even had our 2nd double play of the year!! At the risk of bragging, I would like to say the Baileigh, my daughter, had the game wining RBI single!!

Our next game, the Championship game, is this Sunday. Wish us luck!

Thompson Park Day

Yesterday, My wife, daughter and I went to Thompson Park day. Thompson Park is the Monmouth County park in Lincroft, NJ where I do most of my kayak fishing. We have also been to the off leash dog area and rode our bikes on the paved trails. Although I have been to the park numerous times, there is so much of the park I never knew existed.

I was expecting a small exhibit with a few things for kids. I was blown away by what they offered.  There were 2 inflatable slides, one for bigger kids and one for little kids. There were a couple of rides, a video game trailer, face painting, pumpkin painting, scarecrow building contest (although i thought the $15 fee was a little high) and a small mini golf set up.

If you got hungry walking around with the kids, there were many food vendors selling the usual carnival fare; cotton candy, pretzels, sausage sandwiches, cheese fries etc. And the prices weren't too bad.

Marlu lake, the park lake, was a little too far to walk to so they provided a shuttle bus for anyone wanting to go canoeing. We jumped aboard and took the ride. I fully expected to pay, as they rent canoes for an hourly rate. When we got to the lake I found out it was free. My nephew was with us and I knew that he wanted to go and wasn't sure about my daughter, but at the last second she said yes. They handed us each a life vest and paddle, loaded us into the canoe and off we went. As I have been out on the water many time in my kayak, it was a different experience in a canoe. Although we had a blast canoeing the lake, I do prefer a kayak. But, my daughter really enjoyed it so purchasing a canoe down the road will always be an option.

After we took the shuttle back to the main area, we did the corn maze. I must admit, this wasn't one of the better corn mazes I have done. It was geared more toward younger kids, not 71/2 year olds. once finished with the corn maze we had to pick up the pumpkins my daughter and nephew painted. Then it was time to call it a day.

We all had a great time and were glad we went. I forgot my camera and I was looking forward to taking  lot of pictures while walking around. It looks like I will have another chance next year as we decided to make it a tradition and go every year. My only regret, that we didn't start this new tradition a few years ago.

Softball

Our 2012 HYAL Fall Ball season is winding down. We only have a few games left. I must say, as much as I enjoyed coaching a team, I also like being an assistant coach. It gives me more time to focus on Baileigh as well as coach the other girls.

I have noticed improvements with every girl. They are getting hits and making great plays in the field. In fact, in our game Friday night we had a double play! The bases were loaded a pop up was hit to our pitcher and she caught it! Meanwhile, the girl on third crossed the plate and the girl on second was on third. I was coaching from the third base side so I started yelling to Anna, the pitcher, to 'throw the ball to third'. She did and Jenna, third base girl, caught the ball but didn't do anything. I had to yell to her to 'step on the base', which she did.

After the inning, Jenna asks me 'Did I get that girl out?' I replied, 'Yes! It was a double play!' She said, 'oh'. Then headed to the dugout. LOL

We still need to work on a few things but all in all they are doing great! I am proud of all the girls, especially Baileigh! She is getting better every game and she always tells me how much she loves softball. I hope she keeps playing.

HYAL Fall Ball

After having about 5 or more sign ups, we finally have enough girls to have a 2012 HYAL Fall Ball season. I was looking forward to coaching the clinic division another year as we do not feel Baileigh is ready to move up to the next level just yet. I even told the Commissioner I wanted to coach clinic again with Baileigh.

I got an e-mail from the commissioner last week stating that I am going to coach a minors team. Minors is the next level up from clinic. The clinic is more about teaching and helping the girls. The coach pitches and the team playing the field are allowed to have up to 3 coaches in the field to help with the plays. A lot of the girls never played softball before and do not know even the basics. Baileigh knows how to play and is actually a pretty good player. We just felt she needed at least one more season in clinic to work on catching.

After discussing it with Beth, we wanted Baileigh in clinic so I notified the Commissioner. Well, She is in clinic but there is only one team (we play Matawan, Aberdeen and Marlboro) and they already have a coach so I miss out on being the coach. I offered to be assistant coach. I would rather be an assistant coach in clinic rather  than head coach in majors when Baileigh is not ready.

I'm still looking forward to the season.

2012 HYAL Softball Season Ends

On Father's Day we had the 2012 HYAL All Star game. There were 4 teams and each team had to pick 6 players (5 and 1 alternate). Two combined teams played the other two combined teams. Before the game all the coaches got together and we decided to just play all 12 girls the whole.

Things didn't start too good for our team. My daughter, Baileigh, got a base hit and ran to first to beat the throw and collided with the girl playing first. During the season we used a training first base, which is basically two bases together. The white side for the fielder and the orange side for the runner. For the All Star Game we were using a regular base. When the two girls collided, Baileigh got knocked off her feet, hit the ground so hard her helmet came flying off. When she got up she made sure she touched the base which didn't matter because she was safe!

We had to have another girl run for Baileigh cause she had the wind knocked out of her and had to sit for a little bit. But the next inning she was back in the game!!

Baileigh did great as did all the girls. We didn't keep track of outs or the score so all the girls could play and hit. I don't totally agree with the way we did it but they all had fun.

After the game, we had the All Star medal presentation right on the field. The girls were excited because most of them didn't know they were getting medals for being All Stars. I didn't know either.

After the game and medals we went down to the snack bar area and there was a DJ and grill set up as well as other All Star games and play off games. At 12:30 it was time for the Girls Clinic medal presentation. The DJ handed the mic to each coach and we announced our girls as they each got their medal in front of the whole crowd. All the girls were excited to get their medal especially in front of everybody.

Of course while there I signed up to coach Fall Ball...if they have it this year. Last year there were not enough girls to get the clinic going so hopefully we'll have enough this time.

All in all it was a great day and Baileigh had fun, although a bit sore.

HYAL Softball

The 2012 season of HYAL softball is coming to an end. We are having an end of season day on Father's Day along with medal handouts and the All Star Game. I am proud to say that Baileigh made the All Star team! She has improved so much since last year.

About half way through the season I decided not to coach anymore. It is tough with girls ranging in age from 7 to 9. Every game and practice, my assistant coach (who also happens to be my wife) and I spend so much time telling the girls 'off the fence', 'pay attention', 'don't throw dirt'. And every time we have to it takes time away from coaching.

We also had a couple of girls who never played softball and knew nothing about it. So it a was big challenge to coach the girls who have played almost their whole life and girls who never played at the same time. I think we did a good job. And I must say, it was a good feeling to see a girl getting good hits and making some plays in the field when the first game she ran to third, instead of first on a hit because she didn't know. I have seen a lot of improvement from ALL the girls.

As I sit here getting ready for the end of season celebration and the All Star game, I know that when fall ball starts in a few weeks or so, I'll be signing up to coach.

Memorial Day....Let's Remember The REAL Meaning.....

It occurred to me this weekend that as a whole, I think we lost the real meaning of Memorial Day. It seems that to most Memorial Day weekend is 'the unofficial start of summer', store sales, BBQ's and just a long weekend to relax.

While I do enjoy BBQ's and relaxing, I also think of all the service men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country. I attended the annual Memorial Day Parade in Pequannock, NJ as I have for the past 4 years or so. To see all the police, firemen and veterans  marching and hearing the bag pipes and drums play the military songs is very moving. Makes me so proud to be an American and very thankful for those who have served, are serving or will serve our country.

Although I am a few days late, I would like to send out a Thank You to all military personnel, past, present and future.

Sports Authority- What's The Price??

The other day I was at Sports Authority in Hazlet, NJ looking for a kayak paddle. They had about 5 to choose from and since I am on a budget, I wanted to compare prices, as well as quality. Of all 5 not one of them had a price on it. I walked around the store looking for an employee and did not encounter one until I reached the front of the store (the paddles were in the back of the store) and had to ask a cashier for some assistance. She then paged for someone to go to the paddle area. I commented on not being able to find a salesperson for help and her reply was "we are stretched thin today". I have been in the store enough to know that they are in fact under staffed EVERY day.

I walked back and had to wait for someone to show up to help me so I decided to look around. I was amazed at the amount of products without a price tag. And I didn't even venture out of the water sports area. How are people supposed to shop in this price conciseness economy if more the 2/3 of the products do not have prices on them?

When the salesmen finally showed up I explained that I was interested in the 5 paddles and none of them had a price on them. He then had to go all the way back to where he was to get a scanner to find out the price. What took almost 15 minutes (I was pressed for time) could have taken less than 5 had all the products been properly tagged with prices.

I was never a big fan of Sports Authority due to issues in the past. Although they are 2 mile from my house, I think it is worth the 10 mile drive to go to dick's Sporting Goods in Woodbridge, NJ.

Our First Game

The 2012 HYAL softball season is under way. Our first game was Monday, March 26th, but it was called after the first inning due to extreme wind and very cold temps. We decided to reschedule the game at a later date.

Next up was our Opening Day Parade and Festivities- which included- games all day, food, music, run-hit-pitch contest and other activities. We were to meet at the local fire house and have a parade to the HYAL fields with two of last years winning teams riding on the fire trucks and a police escort. This was to be held on Saturday, March 31st. Due to inclement weather, Opening Day was pushed back until Sunday, April 1st. It was no April Fools when HYAL decided to cancel on Sunday as well. Due to all the rain the fields were not in shape for any games or activities. Sunday I was back at the fields trying to get them ready for the weeks games.

Finally, we had our first game last night. It still was non a complete game as it was called due to darkness. We have 5 fields at HYAL but only 2 have lights. Unfortunately, the field where we play almost all of our games have no lights. We did manage to get in 3 full innings.

This was my first game as Head Coach. With a team of girls ranging in age from 6 to 9, it isn't easy- but it is fun. We have a couple of girls that can really hit the ball. And I am proud to say, my daughter is one of them!! She has improved so much since last year. And, since the first day of practice I have seen an improvement in a couple of the girls. We don't keep score so no one 'wins' or 'loses' (which I don't entirely agree with) but we scored quite a few runs.

This will prove to be a tough week for the girls. A game last night, another game (make-up from the first game) tonight and a scheduled practice tomorrow- which I may cancel. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season and hopefully to the rescheduled Opening Day Parade!

GO WHITE SOX!!!!!!!!!

What is a Professional Photographer?

I've often heard the question 'what is a professional photographer?' When people hear the term 'Professional Photographer', they probably think of the guy on the sidelines of an NFL game getting the game winning touchdown picture, or the woman at the press conference snapping the next Presidential candidate or the people in Hollywood snapping stars coming out of bars and restaurants.

I wonder how many people think of the guy at the wedding reception, or taking the family portrait or even on the beach shooting the sun rise as a professional photographer? Or what about the photographer who dedicates all his work for charity? The truth is, they are all professional photographers.....at least as far as I am concerned.

A professional photographer doesn't just go out and shoot pictures than sell them. The actual 'shooting' is only part of the job. Let's face it, anyone can go out and buy a DSLR with a kit lens and as soon as they walk out of the store call themselves a professional photographer. But a true professional photographer does more than just snap pictures. They consider the composition of the picture. The style of the picture. What will work or what will make a beautiful picture look less than perfect. I've seen many pictures from 'professional photographers' where a tree is growing out of someones head. Or an engagement photo that is slightly out of focus or a number of other imperfections.

Then there is photo re-touching. Whether it is done in Photoshop or other software, the professional photographer will make sure every photo is at it greatest potential for the client. Again, I have seen pictures from 'professional photographers' where the color is off or the white balance is way off. And the professional photographer takes care and pride in his work and it is not just all about the money. So the next time the photographer at the wedding asks you to say cheese, or you see a photographer setting up her tripod on the beach or just walking around town taking pictures you can bet that they are a professional photographer.

Softball 2012

Well, another season of HYAL softball is upon us and again Baileigh is signed up, ready and excited to start. Unlike last year, I will not be the unofficial assistant coach.....I will be the head coach.

Although I have never coached before, last year I assisted the coach in softball and the year before that I was one of the assistants in T-Ball. I got my roster and notified all the parents. Went to my first HYAL meeting and am getting all the equipment on Sunday. All I have to do now is get fingerprinted (not required by HYAL but by Hazlet Township) and attend a 3 hour Rutgers Coaching Clinic (required by HYAL). Both of which are scheduled.

As soon as I get these things taken care of, I can hit the ground running. I intend to have a fun season yet teach the basics of softball to the girls, although most of them already played last year.

Just thinking.....Global Warming???

So far this winter we had 2 snow falls - well the first one was in the fall in October, and neither was significant. And we've had (and are still having) temperatures in the 50's and 60's even and I didn't hear any mention of Global Warming. I remember some winters when we had extreme amounts of snow, freezing temperatures for what seemed like weeks at a time and I heard more about Global Warming then.

Well, I guess Global Warming must come and go.

Whitney Houston

Gov. Chris Christie has ordered the flags in New Jersey to fly half staff in honer of Whitney Houston on the day she is laid to rest. I have lost ALL respect for the gov and have never been so embarrassed by new jersey, my state.

He also said that Whitney Houston is in the same class as Count Basie, Frank Sinatra and Bruce Springsteen. Nothing can be further from the truth. I was never a fan of her or her music but to say she is in the same class as the aforementioned musicians is a bit over the top, in my opinion.

And by ordering the flags lowered on Saturday he sends the message that if you become famous but have a history of substance abuse you can still be a hero.

And as far as the media, both national and local, there are real heroes that are dying to defend our freedom and way of life and we don't hear about half of them. So instead of honoring a crack head who happens to be from new jersey, let's honor the REAL HEROES that die unnoticed.

R.I.P. -- all those that have died defending our freedom and to those that died in the line of duty at home, policemen, firefighters and other first responders.

First Kayaking Fishing Trip

Took my 'new to me' kayak out yesterday for some fishing. Caught not only my first bass from a kayak, but my first fish EVER from a kayak. In fact, it was my first time ever fishing from a yak.

I caught it on a jig with a rubber trailer around some submerged trees. I had the jig sitting on the bottom as I was moving the yak into position. I didn't feel the hit, it was VERY subtle and just felt different as I was reeling in. So I set the hook and it felt like a little guy. Boy was I surprised!! I didn't have a scale on me to weigh it but I estimate it around 2 to 3 pounds. Could only fish for about an hour and 45 minutes as it was getting chilly. Now I can't wait for the warm weather!

Tuesday, January 10, 2012

I recently got a beginners fly tying kit as I am getting really into fly fishing. Tying flies was something I have never even tried to do but always interested me. I'm told when you catch a fish on a fly you tied yourself is an awesome feeling. And I'm hoping to experience that.
I tied 2 last night but the pictures that follow are of the first one, a Fur Ant.

Here the vise, hook and the material are ready to go.

Ice Fishing

Back in the 90's I did a lot of ice fishing here in New Jersey. I've caught pan fish, trout and a bass or two. It was a lot of fun but for some reason I stopped going. About 5 years ago I ventured out on a cold day with a good friend of mine I talked into going. When we got there I pulled out my trusty hand auger and that's when I realized- the blades were dull. So dull I couldn't cut into the ice at all.

After a few choice words I suddenly remembered; a few years prior, my father in law was helping me put up a shed and I needed holes dug for the footings. I know, since I don't ice fish anymore, I'll use my ice auger. DOH!!! After some ball busting from my friend, one of the guys that was fishing when we showed up was leaving. We waited until he was off the ice and used the holes he had drilled. We fished for a few hours and didn't catch anything, so we packed up and headed home. I put the ice gear away and haven't touched it since.

2 of my nephews got into fishing a while ago and since their dad doesn't fish, the have become my fishing buddies. One day this past summer my nephew Jared was asking if I ever went ice fishing because he wants to go. I told him as soon as we have safe ice I'll take him. My wife and I got him an ice fishing pole for Christmas so now he is really psyched to go. And to tell the truth, so am I. Now all we need is a streak of really cold days to get some safe ice (REALLY cold as I won't go out unless there is 6" to 8" of ice) and sharp blades for my auger.
