With the few warm days we had last week and the mild weather this past weekend, I can't wait for spring. End of March should bring back the stripers. Opening day is less than 2 months away. Opening day of trout fishing that is. And spring turkey hunting is coming up. Not to mention the "other" opening day.
This March my friend and I are going to try our hand at Muskellunge (Musky) fishing. We are going to Monksville Reservoir in Long Pond Ironworks State Park, located in Hewitt, NJ. I have been there numerous times for bass fishing but never for Muskies. I have even gone ice fishing there. But I think my ice fishing days are over. I have always heard that Muskies are "the fish of a thousand casts". Do to the fact that they are very lure shy and it is hard to catch them. I guess I'll soon find out. Of course, if I get any I will post pictures here. Stay tuned....

Ralph Dale Earnhardt, Sr.
I can't believe it is 8 years since the death of Dale Earnhardt, Sr. It seems like yesterday when it happened. As I watched the accident happen, I thought nothing of it as there are always wrecks in NASCAR. But, as soon as I heard how concerned Darell Waltrip was, I knew that it was bad. In no way did I think that he died. It wasn't until later on that a friend called and told me.
I left for a business trip to France for a week the next day and was bummed out. I wanted to stay home and watch all the TV coverage and specials because it was almost as if it were a close friend that had died. A week later and the coverage was still all over the TV. The next year I went to the spring race in Dover and on lap 3, as with all the other tracks, it was a lap of silence with everybody, and I mean everybody, holding up three fingers for the entire lap. It was a very moving and emotional lap that I will never forget. For at least one lap, there were no Gordon fans. No Rusty fans. No LaBonte fans, etc. There were 100,00 plus NASCAR fans all mourning the death of a NASCAR legend and icon.
After the race, my brother and I were walking around and we saw a merchandise trailer for Dale Earnhardt Sr. and people were signing it. I wanted to sign "See ya in racing heaven Dale, Sean". So many people had signed the trailer all I could fit was "See ya in heaven, SG". And I had to squeeze that in.
You will be forever missed Dale. #3

Say Thank You....it's not that hard.
I wish I had a nickle for every time I opened or held open a door for someone and they don't say "Thank you". I think that is one of the rudest things you could do. Are we all in that much of a hurry that we can't take a second to say thank you? Or is it just that people these days are rude and only out for themselves? I was raised to always say "Please" and "Thank you". I instill the same in my daughter. She may only be 4 but she has very good manners.
Another thing that irritates the hell out of me is when I am driving and let another driver go and they do not show any courtesy. They just go on their merry way as if it was my duty to let them go. It is so easy to just put your hand up and give it little "thank you wave". In my development the streets are narrow and there is parking on both sides. I have a pick-up truck so naturally me and a car can't pass at the same time. More than not I pull over and let the other person go and 3 out of 5 times no thank you. What's even worse than that, they speed up to try and beat me through. That pisses me off because there are a lot of kids in the area and a school right on said street.
I guess everybody is too wrapped up in their own little world that they can't take the time out to be courteous. I guess I expect too much of people.

Wii and Wii Fit
We just got the Wii and the Wii Fit last night and I am already addicted to it. It came with five games; golf, tennis, boxing, bowling and baseball. I like the golf but unfortunately, I play Wii golf much like I play golf in real life....sucky.
The Wii Fit is awesome. It keeps track of your BMI and your weight. It also tracks your progress and goals. My wife and I are competing in various events. There's slalom, ski jump, hula-hoop, aerobics and more. There is even one program where you have to jog in place. Now I don't know about you but I haven't ran in a VERY long time. Even my daughter (4) plays it. I thought maybe the Wii Fit would be a gimmick but so far I am impressed. It is also a lot cheaper and easier than joining a gym....which I used to do.
Well, I keep posting about my progress from time to time........unless it is not good. :-)

Another deerless hunt......
It happened yet again...a deerless hunt. I got to the farm late, about 1:30 P.M. It was 14 degrees. I headed into the woods and got about halfway to the back fields when I kicked up a deer on the right side in heavy brush. I couldn't tell if it was a buck or doe as it ran in the opposite direction. I never had a shot opportunity.
I hunted on the ground all day...well, all afternoon anyway. About an hour or so later, I was sitting in a clearing off the path. In about the same area I saw the deer earlier. Up the path about 80 yards I saw a doe cross, stop in the path for about 3 seconds then head into the woods. 80 yards is too far of a shot...for me anyway. I saw some more movement but wasn't sure if it was a deer or not.
Thank God for hunting clothes. The temp must have gone down when I was out there but I was not the least bit cold. One thing I did realize though; the next time I go to the archery range, I am going to practice shooting in awkward positions so that if I am faced with the same situation as I faced with the first deer, maybe I will be able to take the shot. Maybe.
I have one more chance. I am going back on Jan 31st, the last day of the season.

Jersey driving
What is it with people in New Jersey and the weather? Every time it snows or rains the stupidity of people comes out. I was driving on the Garden State Parkway south in Monmouth county this morning when the snow started. It was about 6:30 or so and not much traffic. The snow was coming down fairly hard and the roads had a light dusting on them. In fact it was blowing around from the traffic. I can't tell you how many morons I came up on doing 40 MPH in the middle lane. What the f*$k is that!! The right lane is for driving slow. Besides, there was no reason to drive that slow at all.
Sure, there were trucks out sanding so I slowed down around them but otherwise the conditions were fine for 65 MPH; the speed limit. The only thing worse is when these people do that in the fast lane. If you are too afraid to drive in inclement weather, take a bus, train or call a cab. Or better yet, stay home.
The other thing I see all the time is cars that are covered in snow except for a spot on the wind shield. I guess these people are in too much of a hurry to clean off the snow and/or ice. I wonder what they would do if ice flew off their car and it damaged another car. Or if it hurts or God forbid kills someone. I don't understand it. Get up 15 minutes earlier and clean off your car!!!!

Snow geese
NJ is implementing a spring snow goose hunting season from March 11 – April 18, 2009 . Here is the link to the site. http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/news/2009/snowgeese09.htm Before we do anything about them, I think we should do something about the Canada Goose first. Everywhere you go you see them; parks, playgrounds, parking lots etc. I mean, you can't even play a round of golf without coming in contact with them. And forget about fishing. I take my daughter fishing and there are Canada Goose droppings all over.
A company I used to work for had a really bad problem with them, so they spent money on cardboard cutouts of dogs to scare the geese away. After a while the geese became accustomed to them and actually starting eating and sleeping right next to them. Then they hired a dog patrol, figuring that a real dog would do the trick. Although the girl with the dog came at different times, the same thing happened. As soon as she left, the geese came back. Sometimes even more.
But this is New Jersey so it is no surprise that the officials who run the state would not want to do anything to scavengers that feed off other people. I mean the Canada geese, not the politicians.
