What do people hating him have to do with anything? In NASCAR I hate Jeff Gordon more than anyone (except Manny Ramirez) but I would still consider him one of the greatest drivers. It all comes down to opinion. You can't compare Jeter and Rivera to Ruth and DiMaggio. It is a different game today. Besides, if there were no such thing as steroids, all the old records would still be intact. From 1980 on there should be an * next to any broken record.
I know you can't compare players from differant eras, but you are the one who raised the question.
As for steroids, all the old records would still be broken. Players today are bigger, stronger, faster (even without steroids). The balls are juiced, the bats are lighter. Mark McGuire hit 49 homeruns as a 170 lb. rookie. Barry Bonds was a hall of famer with 300 homeruns before he touched steroids.
To answear your question, by the time he retires, Derek Jeter will be the greatest Yankee ever. He will be the all time hits leader, rookie of the year, World Series MVP, 4(+) championships, career .300 hitter, 300 homeruns, 1500 rbi's
When I raised the question, like you first stated, I refered to past players. What if Jeter stopped playing now, would he still be the greatest Yankee? Or one of the greatest? What if Mattingly didn't hurt his back and retire when he did? Or if Munson hadn't died? Assuming Jeter keeps pace I may agree with you. But would you still consider him the greatest Yankee right now? If you are the one who stated that as I wouldn't know 'cause you don't leave your name....
No to Munson and Mattingly. Munson was a decent player, but his tragic death does not make him a Hall Of Famer. Mattingly had the best 5 year stretch of any player ever from '82 to '85, but his other 8 years were, again, average. This is evident by the fact that he is not and never will be a Hall Of Famer.
"Mattingly had the best 5 year stretch of any player ever from '82to '85...."???? 5 years?? And I wasn't considering him one of the greatest, I merely questioned what would have happened had he not gotten hurt.
I ment '86. Had he continued to play, his numbers would have gone down each year and hurt his career numbers.
Of all the Yankees 22 Championships up untill 1996, you can take any player off the team and they still would have won, Take Jeter OR Rivera off any of the 4 from '96 to '00 and no chance they win.
Mariano on the Yankees, Tom Brady, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson. No way their teams ever win championships without them. Ask Kobe Bryant if one player can make a differance.
You truly believe Michael Jordon is the SOLE reason for the Bulls championships?? And Tom Brady the SOLE reason for the super bowls?? And so on. Well, then again, the opposite happened to the Giants. They lose Shockey and go on a tear and win the super bowl and beat your Tom Brady. BTW who are you???

Ever hear of Jeter or Rivera??
Yes I have heard of them. I also heard of Roger Maris, Bernie Williams Paul O'Neill etc. I wasn’t going to list all the possible best Yankee players.
Roger Maris was an average player at best and Yankee fans hated him. Williams and O'neil aren't even in the top 10 best Yankees ever!!

I truley do not believe that one player makes or breaks a team, let alone a whole season. One player may affect one game, but a whole season??
You must be out of your mind!!
